Admissions Policy
Since Schiller International University operates on a rolling admissions system, it is possible to advise applicants of their acceptance or rejection soon after receipt of all application materials (including transcripts). Within three weeks of this notification, accepted students are expected to send in a $500 or local currency equivalent non-refundable tuition deposit, which will be credited against fees due. Although there is no application deadline, most visa and foreign exchange authorities require long, complicated formalities. Therefore we strongly advise applicants who require visas to apply at least two months before the beginning of the semester for which they wish to enroll.

Terms of Enrollment
Students must enroll for at least one term of study and may begin their studies in September and January for semester classes and in May or June, depending on campus, for the summer sessions. (See Academic Calendar.)

Admission to the University

Requirements for Undergraduate Admission

Schiller International University receives applications from almost every country in the world, representing a great variety of educational systems. For entrance to the university, applicants must have completed the secondary level of education, generally 12 years, or have 5 GCE O-levels at Grade C or above, or Spanish BUP/COU or Bachiller LOGSE. Applications are handled individually. An applicant's race, religion, national origin, sex or country of citizenship are not taken into consideration in determining admission to the university program.

Schiller International University offers students with little or no knowledge of English the opportunity to enroll in an intensive English program at the London, Florida, or Leysin campuses. After successfully completing this course, students will be able to follow lectures and do all their course work in English. Before registration, all new students whose native language is not English are required to take the English Language Placement Test. On the basis of this test, students will be placed in the appropriate English language class or their Foreign Language requirement will be waived altogether. Students who are placed in Advanced English will be awarded 4 to 8 credits and those who are exempted from further English language instruction will receive 12 to 16 credits. All qualified students will receive University credits for their English language courses taken at SIU.

Undergraduate students who have a TOEFL score received during the last two years, of at least 500 (or 173 for the computerized TOEFL test) can be accepted into university studies without further EFL requirements. However, to receive EFL credits, these students must take the SIU English Placement Exam prior to their first registration at SIU as described above. Please also note that students must have had their official TOEFL scores sent directly to SIU's U.S. Admissions Office from the Educational Testing Service prior to registration. Unofficial or student copies are not acceptable. SIU's TOEFL I.D. number is 0835.

Applicants who have worked full-time should submit curriculum vitae (résumé) containing name and address of their employers, dates of employment, job title, and a short description of duties.

Summer Session Admission
Applicants for the summer session must have completed 12 years of formal education, have 5 GCE O-levels at Grade C or above, or be students in good standing at another college or university.

Requirements for Graduate Admission

Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent, with a major in the graduate area for which they are applying.  Applicants must have maintained a good academic record in their undergraduate studies.

Non-native English speakers must pass the SIU English Placement Test to enter the graduate program or provide scores of at least 550 (or 213 for the computerized TOEFL test) on a TOEFL test taken within the previous two years. Students must have their official TOEFL scores sent directly to SIU's U.S. Admissions Office prior to their first registration at SIU. Unofficial or student copies of TOEFL scores cannot be accepted. SIU's TOEFL I.D. number is 0835.

Advanced level English instruction (Eng 131-132) may be taken concurrently with graduate courses. Total credit hours, however, may not exceed 16. Therefore students required to take English language courses may need more than the minimum number of terms to complete their program. Enrollment in the prescribed English classes is required upon registration for the first and all subsequent terms at Schiller and cannot be postponed.

Applicants who have worked full-time should submit curriculum vitae (résumé) containing name and address of their employers, dates of employment, job title, and a short description of duties.
Summer Session Admission
Applicants for summer graduate study must be qualified graduate students majoring in the subject of the program for which they are applying. Applications are also accepted from students with a bachelor's degree who wish to attend graduate courses without becoming candidates for a master's degree.

Application Procedure

Please refer to the Application Instructions.
Transfer Students/Transfer Credits
Undergraduate

Students may transfer to Schiller in any semester of their undergraduate studies. All transfer students who intend to receive a degree from Schiller must complete the last two semesters (at least the last 33 credits not including credits from the English Placement test) at Schiller. Some transfer students, particularly those in their third and fourth years, may find it necessary to take additional courses in order to fulfill degree requirements.

Credit is granted for undergraduate work completed with a grade of C or above, provided it is applicable to Schiller degree programs. The total number of transfer credits from other colleges and universities is listed on the student's permanent record. However, only grades in courses taken at Schiller are used to compute the grade point average.
Credit and/or advanced placement may be awarded to students who receive appropriate scores on ACT Proficiency Examinations (PEP), CLEP subject Examinations, USAFI and DANTES College Level Examinations, as well as on the College Board Advanced Placement Exams, providing they are applicable to the student's degree program.

Graduate
Up to 9 semester credits toward an MBA degree may be accepted for transfer to Schiller International University if the graduate course has been completed with a grade of B or above and is applicable to the Master's degree program in which the student is enrolled. In transferring from one Schiller graduate program to another, the student may transfer up to one-third of the credits previously earned to the second program if they are applicable to the specific course requirements. Up to 15 credits toward the 45-credit MBA degree program may be granted in internal transfer from one SIU graduate program to another.

All Transfer Students
Transfer students who intend to become candidates for a Schiller degree will have their credits evaluated in time for registration provided all admissions procedures have been completed at least 6 weeks before the date of registration. Please note: all documents - original transcripts, copies of diplomas and certificates - must have been received by the admissions office before credits can be evaluated.

Transfer of credit from Schiller is determined by the established policy of the college or university at which the student is taking his degree. Upon written request, Schiller will mail a transcript of the student's work to his or her college or university.

Student Visa Information

Once accepted, students should contact the nearest Spanish Consulate to find out what documents are required to obtain a student visa.

Normally Spanish authorities require the following:

1) The admission letter from Schiller + 2 photocopies.
In some cases, the Consulate will ask for a letter in Spanish directly from the Madrid Campus confirming your admission. The Admissions Office in Madrid will only issue this letter once the tuition deposit has been paid.
2) Valid passport.
3) A sworn affidavit of support by your parents or guardians, or a financial bank statement showing minimum income of $1200 per month for your stay in Spain.
4) Health insurance (not only accident insurance). In some cases they will allow you to get this upon arrival in Spain.
5) Health Certificate (one original + 1 copy) indicating that the applicant does not suffer from cholera, bubonic plague or yellow fever, nor from drug addiction, any important psychological disorder nor any psychopathic illness with agitation, delirium, hallucination or confusing psychosis.
6) photos- 3 normally required.
7) Visa application form (obtainable at the Consulate).

Upon arrival students must exchange the visa TYPE D for a student residence card. Students will have 90 days after arrival to do this. At this time, the student must show proof of health insurance, financial support, and a letter from SIU stating they are registered for full-time study.

For further information contact the Spanish Consulate nearest to you or the
Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C.,
2375 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037. Tel.: (202) 728-2330.
In Miami contact the Spanish Consulate at
2655 Le Jeune Rd., Suite 203, Coral Gables, FL 33134. Tel.: (305) 446-5511.

Please be aware that, in some special cases, Spanish authorities may even demand pre-payment of a full academic year before they may even consider your visa. Contact the Consulate by phone beforehand so they can inform you about their specific requirements and about all the documents they will need from you. If tuition pre-payment is required, please proceed to forward payment following the instructions mailed to you with your acceptance letter. Once payment is received, we will fax a letter to the Embassy confirming the amount paid.

Please note that if your visa is denied or if you decide not to attend, we will return your tuition payment EXCEPT the non-refundable tuition deposit. This deposit will only be reimbursed if you provide us with WRITTEN PROOF from the Embassy indicating that indeed your visa was denied.
