Life in Madrid
Madrid is the capital city of Spain and also the country´s largest city. At 650 feet, it is Europe´s highest capital city and is surrounded by mountains – you can ski here in the winter. The temperature is continental – cold and dry in winter and hot and dry in summer. Our blue skies are famous all year round. The city has a large number of parks and leafy boulevards.
Madrid is connected to the rest of Spain by high speed trains (AVE) and modern motorways. Most Spanish cities also have international airports and Spain welcomes tourists from all over the world. Within the city, there is a comprehensive modern system of public transport. Schiller is served by both the metro and by several bus lines.
Once an Arabic town, Madrid became the capital of Spain in the 17th century and is therefore one of Europe´s younger cities. The historic towns of Toledo, Segovia and Avila are an easy daytrip away.
Spaniards are open and gregarious, filling the streets late into the night. There are hundreds of cafés, bars and restaurants and Spanish cuisine is currently among the leading cuisines of the world. Madrid has world-class museums and a recently renovated historic center. For those interested in soccer, the Santiago Bernabeu stadium is just a ten minute walk from campus.
