Formalities
Unless you are an EU citizen, you will probably require a student visa in order to study in Spain. Please note that a 90 day tourist visa cannot be converted to a student visa without returning to your home country. Please feel free to contact us if you are unsure whether you need a visa to study in Spain.
If you require a student visa, please read the following guidelines:

This information is provided as a general guide to studying in Spain. However, every applicant should consult with the relevant Spanish authorities or websites to verify what they require to study in Spain.
Student visa or immigration policies are subject to change and it is the responsibility of each applicant to Schiller International University, Madrid to ensure they comply with all immigration guidelines.
Student Visa
In order to process a student visa, students must already have applied to and been accepted by Schiller International University – Madrid.
Accepted students will be sent an acceptance letter in English and also letters in Spanish for the Spanish Consulate which explain the status of the university, the type of studies to be undertaken and the length of these studies. We also explain our housing service to the Consulate officials.
A. Before arrival in Madrid:
In order to enter Spain as a student, non EU-candidates must go to the Spanish consulate of their country and present all required documents including an admission letter from Schiller International University to apply for the student visa.
For up-to-date information on the necessary documents that students have to present upon request of a student visa for Spain, please contact your closest Spanish Consulate. Please note that it may take some time to process your visa – allow at least 2 months.
Below is a list of usual requirements and procedures – please check with your local Spanish Consulate.
STUDENT VISAS must be applied for at the consulate with jurisdiction over his/her state of permanent residence.
STUDENT VISAS ALWAYS TAKE MORE THAN 6 WEEKS TO PROCESS. It is strongly recommended that you apply as soon as possible as early as four months in advance to allow enough processing time. Applications will not be accepted, in principle, less than 4 weeks before the date of departure. THERE IS NO RUSH OR EXPEDITED SERVICE.
STUDENT VISA APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and must be made individually by the student or his/her legal representative. .
REQUIREMENTS
To apply for a student visa you should provide the Consulate with ALL of the following (all documents must be originals unless indicated otherwise):
1. National Visa Application Form, – obtainable from the Consulate.
2. Original Passport signed by the bearer and still valid for at least 1 more year from the date of application, with at least one blank page to affix the visa..
3. Proof of residence in this Consulate´s jurisdiction
4. Recent standard passport photographs:: 2 photos. GLUE one photograph to each visa form.( DO NOT STAPLE THE PHOTOGRAPH)
5. Proof of admission to Spanish Academic Center as a full-time student, from the Spanish Center or U.S program, indicating nature of studies and registration number of the center of studies with the Ministry of Education (if not registered, state so)
6. Proof of financial means for the period of stay in Spain, proof could be:
- Letter from the Institution organizing the studies stating educational and living expenses have been paid for in advance, or
- Notarized letter of parents/custodians, assuming financial responsibility while student is in Spain, or
- Current statement of student´s bank account.
7. Proof of Medical/Accidental Insurance with international coverage, Written confirmation from insurance company of a valid health/accidental insurance with full international coverage in Spain and rest of Schengen countries with a minimum coverage of $37,000. Or Travel/accidental insurance coverage for the entire trip.
8. Medical Statement (only if your stay is for more than 6 months ) : a doctor’s recent statement (issued within 3 months from the application date), on doctor’s or medical center’s letterhead, indicating that “the student has been found to be free of any of the illnesses that may have serious public consequences, as described and established in the Intenational Health Regulations of 2005″.
9. Non-refundable visa processing fee. Money Order ONLY, payable to the Consulate General of Spain. Personal checks, credit cards nor cash can be accepted
10. If the period of study is less than 6 months, no Police Certificate is needed. The visa will be issued for 6 months with multiple entries and will allow the student to stay in Spain for the duration of studies up to 6 months.
11. For applicants under 18 years of age, a notarized authorization from both parents, with the Apostille of the Hague Convention (contact the Secretary of State for your state of residency) and a copy of the applicants birth certificate showing parents names.
